Website files become difficult to maintain when application code, uploads, temporary files, and backups are mixed together. A clear structure makes routine maintenance safer.

Identify File Types

  • Application files: Core software, themes, plugins, and custom code.
  • Uploads: Images and documents.
  • Configuration: Database and environment settings.
  • Logs: Diagnostic information.
  • Backups: Recovery copies that should not be public.

Use Consistent Names

Names such as homepage-hero.webp are easier to identify than generic camera filenames. Use a consistent naming convention for custom files.

Protect Sensitive Files

Configuration files, database exports, and backups should not be publicly downloadable. Store backups outside the document root when practical.

Document custom scripts and modified files so future updates do not overwrite important changes unexpectedly.
